Backcountry Rise (August 29, 2026)
Backcountry Rise is a trail race held within the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. The event uses the Mount St. Helens Science & Learning Center above Coldwater Lake as its base camp. Courses run through the Mt. Margaret Backcountry and feature high mountain lakes, ridgelines, creeks, and varied mountain terrain. Wildlife in the area includes mountain goats, elk, deer, bear, and raptors.

Location, logistics and requirements
Parking, camping, and use of the Science & Learning Center are included with race registration. Field camp tent sites are available for a fee. The Science & Learning Center has running water and flush toilets; no showers are available. Post-race food and beverages are provided for participants; guests may pay a contribution to join.
Registration fees vary by date: 50K $170–$190, 20 Mile $125–$150, Half Marathon $100–$125. The 50K has an experience requirement: prior trail ultramarathon finish or prior Backcountry Rise 20 miler finish. Mandatory gear is required at check-in: 50K runners must carry 35–40 ounces (1 liter) fluids, a lightweight jacket, emergency blanket, and safety whistle. 20 Mile and Half Marathon runners must carry 12–20 ounces of fluids; a jacket and emergency blanket may be required if the forecast predicts precipitation.
