Course and race details
The races run on Black Mountain (Amat Kwanyil), an ancient extinct volcano on Kumeyaay land. The area includes chaparral and coastal sage scrub with manzanita-lined single-track and sections of jeep trail. Trails are described as rocky, steep, and technical. Elevation gain is about 5,500 feet for the 50K, about 2,500 feet for the 25K, and about 2,000 feet for the half marathon. Wildlife in the open space includes deer, bobcats, red diamond rattlesnakes, and occasional mountain lion. Aid stations are staffed by ham radio volunteers who relay runner and aid station information to race headquarters. The 50K course was slightly modified in 2025 to address a private property issue.
