Event overview
The Earth Day trail races take place April 18, 2026 at Veterans Acres in Crystal Lake, Illinois (431 N. Walkup). Distances offered:
- 50K
- 15 Mile
- 5 Mile
Registration closes April 10. Early bird pricing is available until November 30. Packet pick up is available at the Ornery Mule Racing Trailhead/Headquarters (824 S. Main Street, Crystal Lake) and on race day at the pavilion near the main parking lot.
Course, services and policies
The course is a 5 mile loop that runs on single track with rolling hills. All race distances start together in a ball field and run around a pond before entering the single track. There is one major aid station at the start/finish with homemade items and typical ultra foods, including cookies, PB & J, sports drink, soda, chips, and pretzels. Participants are encouraged to bring their own water bottle as the event is working toward being landfill free. The event has an overall time limit of 8 hours.
Awards: first overall male and female receive awards and are excluded from age group awards. Age group categories for men and women are Under 29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, and 60+. Runners may change race distance before the event; to remain eligible for awards when dropping to a shorter distance, the change must be made by April 8. The race offers rollover options instead of refunds: full rollover if notified by 70 days before the event, 50% race credit if notified by 25 days before the event, and an 80% rollover credit option for volunteers who work 6 hours.
