Event overview

The Elkhorn Crest 50 takes place on July 25, 2026, at Sumpter Fairgrounds in Sumpter, OR. Distances offered:

  • 50 Miler: 53 miles, 10,500 ft ascent, almost 11,000 ft descent.
  • 50K: ~50 km course, 6,500 ft ascent, 7,100 ft descent.

Registration opens January 1, 2026.

Courses and terrain

The 50 Miler follows the Elkhorn Mountain ridgeline across sub-alpine forests and grasslands, with panoramic views of Baker Valley, the Wallowas, and the Blue Mountains. The course has an average elevation over 7,200 ft and combines smooth single track with rocky, technical sections. The trail includes sustained climbs and descents where it veers off the Crest Trail.

The 50K starts in the old mining town of Bourne, OR, follows much of the same route, then finishes after Aid Station 3. The 50K route includes climbs to and from the crest, an out-and-back to Lost Lake, and a loop around Summit Lake. The event is cupless to minimize waste.

Mandatory gear and policies

50 Miler runners must carry the following at all times: ability to carry 1.5 liters of fluid, a jacket, an emergency blanket, and a headlamp with extra batteries. 50K runners must have the ability to carry 1.5 liters of fluid; other items are recommended but not required. The 2020 requirement listed a buff/face covering for aid stations, shuttle, and the start line.

No transfers to another runner. Cancel 30 or more days before the race for 50% credit toward next year; no refund if cancelled less than 30 days before the race. If the organizer cancels and the event cannot be rescheduled, refunds or credits will not be given. The event benefits the Baker City high school cross country/track team.
