Event overview
The Prairie Fire Race Series is an annual set of road races organized by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission. The fall event is held on the second Sunday of October and the spring event is held on the first Sunday of May. The series includes the following race options:
- 26.2 miles (Marathon)
- 13.1 miles (Half Marathon)
- 5K
- Mayor's Friendly 5K
The marathon was rebranded as the Prairie Fire Marathon in 2010. The commission reports more than 60,000 total participants across 15 years and contributions of over $200,000 to local charities.
Course and logistics
The race is USATF certified (KS19019TJD) and is listed as a Boston Marathon qualifier. Runners begin at Equity Bank Park in Wichita, KS, and the course routes through downtown Wichita, Old Town, the Douglas Design District, College Hill, Crown Heights, the City of Eastborough, areas along the Arkansas River, Riverside, and Indian Hills before returning to finish inside Equity Bank Park. Finishers cross on the stadium field near second base and can be viewed from the stands and big screen.
The event uses MyLaps chip timing with the bib serving as the timing chip. Race fees typically include a tri-blend event shirt, medal, drinks, food, and online race photos for participants. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
