Event overview
The First Responders "Bring in the Backup" Triathlon takes place on July 25, 2026 in Northwood, Iowa at Swensrud Park / Northwood Swimming Pool. The event honors and represents military, firefighters, nurses, EMS, dispatchers, corrections, and law enforcement. First responders start first in the race, followed by other participants as backup. Participants do not have to be first responders to take part.
Race details and logistics
The main race is a sprint triathlon with swim, bike, and run segments. Additional events include a 2-3 person relay, an aquabike, and a duathlon. Distances for the events are:
- Sprint triathlon: 150 meter swim, 10.4 mile bike, 5k run
- Relay (sprint): same distances as the sprint triathlon, teams of 2-3 people
- Aquabike: 250 meter swim and 10.4 mile bike
- Duathlon: 1.5 mile run, 10.4 mile bike, 5k run
The swim is at the Northwood Pool. The bike course is on a public highway with rolling hills for most of the course. The 5k run is mostly flat with one gradual hill. Entry fees listed for individual events are $55 and $90 for the relay. Registered athletes receive a race t-shirt (guaranteed for registrations on or before July 16, 2026), a medal, event timing, some prizes, and refreshments.
