Kennebec Mountain Run
The Kennebec Mountain Run is scheduled for August 1, 2026, at La Plata City Campground in Hesperus, Colorado. The event was established in 2001 and is organized as a non-profit; all proceeds support La Plata County Search & Rescue. Entry is limited to 150 runners and participants are required to hold an active Colorado Search & Rescue (CORSAR) card; a CORSAR card may be purchased online for $3.
Course and logistics
- 15 miles
- Aid station: mile 4.2 and mile 10.4
The trail course gains approximately 3,100 feet and reaches about 12,200 feet at Kennebec Pass. The route passes views of the Animas River and Dolores River valleys and through areas of alpine wildflowers. The course direction alternates by year: clockwise in odd years and counterclockwise in even years.
There is a single aid station, The Fork, encountered twice; it provides water and Tailwind. Participants must carry their own hydration system, and aid station cups are not planned. The event runs under a special use permit from the USFS Columbine Ranger District and La Plata County. Parking at La Plata City Campground is limited, so carpooling or alternative parking options are recommended. Organizers reserve the right to enforce an emergency cut-off for safety; failure to comply may result in disqualification and a ban from future events. Post-race awards include pies for the top three overall male and female finishers and a raffle for running shoes; food and beverages are provided.
