Event format and course
The Kettlebell Kountdown is an elimination race at Oak Mountain State Park in Pelham, Alabama on Saturday, November 1, 2025. The course is a clearly marked one-mile loop completed repeatedly for a total of 31 miles (50K). Each lap must be completed while carrying a 20-pound kettlebell provided by the organizer; personal kettlebells are not allowed.
Runners face a series of set time limits that decrease as the competition progresses. If a runner fails to complete a one-mile loop within the current time limit, they are eliminated and may not re-enter the course. The final lap has no time limit; if more than one runner reaches the final lap, the fastest to complete that lap wins their division. Only competitors who complete all 31 laps receive an official finisher’s medal.
Rules, logistics, and awards
All participants must be 18 or older. The kettlebell must be in contact with at least one hand at all times. Prohibited methods include carrying the kettlebell with ropes, chains, bags, vests, or any attachment, and throwing or tossing the kettlebell. Runners may rest the kettlebell on the ground but must pick it up and carry it to advance. Outside assistance with carrying on the course is not allowed.
Crew members may assist runners in the start/finish area but may not provide aid on the one-mile loop. Pacers are not permitted on course. Race day packet pickup is at the Lakeside Pavilion near the south trailhead parking lot; a photo ID is required. The winner in each division (male and female) is the last remaining runner or the fastest finisher of the final lap and receives a custom 20-pound kettlebell as the trophy. Water and light snacks will be available on site; runners are responsible for their own aid. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
