Course, logistics and services
The trail surface varies among dirt, clay, sandstone and scoria, with frequent climbs and descents and minimal tree cover. Runners will encounter multiple creek crossings; some may be dry while others require getting wet. Elevation gain is listed per distance, from mostly downhill for the shortest course up to 11,968 feet for the 116-mile course.
Aid stations are provided approximately every 25 miles, and there are about nine road-intersection checkpoints with porta potties and water. Runners in the longer ultras are required to arrange personal transportation to and from remote start points. Pacers are allowed for the 50 and 116 mile races from designated checkpoints, must be at least 18, register, and wear an official pacer bib. Finishers in 5k, 10k, half and full marathon distances receive a finisher medal; ultra finishers receive a custom belt buckle. The 100-mile option uses a 36 hour cutoff.
