Event overview
The Memorial Day Trail Race takes place on Memorial Day Weekend, on Saturday, May 23. It is race number 3 of the Southeastern Trail Series. The event offers two distances:
- 6 mile (course measured at about 6.76 miles)
- 12 mile
Timing is done with ankle-mounted HUTAGS. Registration opens December 1. A preview run is planned with the date to be announced; it starts at the iron gate at the north parking lot of the Belcher Tract.
Course, logistics and awards
Both courses run on the Belcher Tract and pass Belcher Lake, Demopolis Lake and Summit Lake. Sections follow Belcher Road, a 6 mile long gravel road that runs from the top to the bottom of the mountain and passes all three lakes. The 6 mile course has about 894 ft of elevation gain; the 12 mile course has about 1,631 ft of elevation gain. Tailwind hydration drinks will be provided at aid stations.
Parking is at the lot off Belcher Road, about 500 yards past North Shelby Baptist Church, with a $5 per car parking fee. The lot holds about 50 cars; overflow parking is at North Shelby Baptist Church. Packet pickup and late registration take place on the Friday and Saturday of race weekend at the north entrance pavilion. Place awards are given to 1st, 2nd and 3rd overall male and female; age awards include Masters 40-49, Grand Master 50-59 and Ultra Grand Master 60+. The 6 mile race also has male and female awards for 14 and under. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
