Event
The Pony Express Trail 50 and 100 is an ultramarathon held on the historic Pony Express Trail in western Utah on October 17, 2025. Distances offered:
- 100 miles
- 50 miles
The course is entirely on dirt roads with about 3,000 feet total elevation gain/loss. The route is remote and runs west from Lookout Campground, west of Faust, UT.
Course and logistics
The 100-mile course goes roughly 58 miles out to Fish Springs National Wildlife Refuge and then returns, finishing at Simpson Springs. The 50-mile course follows the same initial route and finishes at the Blackrock Pony Express station site. The route stays on the main Pony Express dirt road and is marked at major intersections.
Runners must be crew-supported; crews drive along and provide food and drink. Crews stop on the right side of the road; runners generally keep to the left. Sharing a crew is allowed but shared runners must remain together or within four miles; leaving that distance or switching crews without approval can result in disqualification. Pacers and bicycles are allowed. Water is available at mile 16.4 (Simpson Springs). There are no aid stations; there is a barbecue at Blackrock. Checkpoints require timing check-ins at Simpson Springs, Dugway Topaz Well, Blackrock, and Fish Springs. Cell coverage is spotty; checkpoints have ham radios and internet. Finisher awards: belt buckles for 100-mile finishers and medallions for 50-mile finishers. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
