Event overview
The Run With the Horses is an annual road and trail running event organized by the Green River Chamber of Commerce and held on the third weekend in August in Green River, Wyoming. Races offered:
- Marathon
- Half marathon
- 10K
- 5K
The event is held in conjunction with the River Festival, which includes a Cajun shrimp boil, craft vendors, beer gardens, live music, food vendors, and fireworks. Awards are given in multiple categories. Entry fees for 2026 are listed by distance; full and half marathon entries include a t-shirt and finisher medal, while 10K and 5K runners may purchase shirts separately.
Course and logistics
All races start at Expedition Island. The start elevation is 6,100 ft. The course uses city streets and the paved Greenbelt Trail for the first ~2 miles, then turns onto the Wild Horse Loop Tour Road, a county graded dirt road. Runners climb 1st Springs Canyon to about 7,300 ft and then run across White Mountain on rolling hills between 7,300 and 7,500 ft. The course is an out-and-back with a turnaround at each race midpoint.
Aid stations are provided every 2 miles starting at mile 2 with water and Gatorade; several stations offer fruit, chips, granola bars, and other snacks. Port-a-potties are placed at the start, mile 2, mile 6.6, mile 8.6, and the marathon turnaround. A 7-hour time limit applies to all races.
