History and beneficiaries
The race began in 1984 as a charity run created in response to the October 23, 1983 Marine Barracks Beirut bombing. The first event took place on Armed Forces Day in May 1984 at NAS Pensacola, with military and civilian participants and more than $4,000 raised for a Marine Corps scholarship fund for affected families. Over time the race redirected proceeds to nonprofit children’s organizations in the Pensacola area. Local active-duty military units and high school JROTC units commonly join the event, sometimes running in formation. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
