About the race
The Shades of Death 10 Miler is a challenging 10-mile loop run and hike held in Avella, Pennsylvania, starting and finishing at the Polar Star Club. The course features scenic back roads, including the notable Shades of Death Road, with views of farms and forests. Participants face over 1,200 feet of ascent and descent, making it a demanding route.
The event includes three aid stations located near miles 3, 6, and 8, and has a 4-hour cutoff time. After the race, runners can enjoy a meal, drinks, and live music. Proceeds support local Volunteer Fire Departments.
