Event
The Thumbs Up Vertical Challenge takes place in Estes Park, CO on December 6, 2025. The field is limited to 30 participants. Placings are determined by the number of poker chips each runner returns to their assigned jar; at each turnaround runners collect one poker chip and bring it back to deposit. Uphill runners yield to downhill runners. Unique patches are awarded at three ascent milestones: 14 ascents (Estes Park, 7,522'), 18 ascents (Deer Mountain, 10,103'), and 26 ascents (Longs Peak, 14,259'). A special award is given to the winner.
Course and logistics
The course uses the Thumb Open Space out-and-back trail with 540 ft of ascent per lap. Terrain is described as 100% single track with switchbacks, steps, and steep rocks. Runners may not park at the trailhead; they may drop off supplies but must plan to be dropped off, arrive by bike, or come on foot. The Thumb Open Space is a Town-owned 65-acre property on the south side of Prospect Mountain, named for a thumb-like rock outcrop and open to public access since July 1, 2022. The area includes climbing routes and offers views of Longs Peak, Mount Meeker, and Twin Sisters from much of the trail. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
