Event overview
The Thumbs Up Vertical Challenge takes place in Estes Park, CO on December 6, 2025. The event is an ascent-based out-and-back format on the Thumb Open Space trail. At the trail turnaround, runners collect a poker chip and deposit it at the start; collected poker chips are counted to determine finishing order. Unique patches are awarded at three ascent milestones: 14 ascents (Estes Park elevation 7,522 ft), 18 ascents (Deer Mountain elevation 10,103 ft), and 26 ascents (Longs Peak elevation 14,259 ft). A special award is given to the winner.
Course and rules
Each lap on the Thumb Open Space trail includes 540 ft of ascent. The trail surface is 100% single-track with switchbacks, steps, and steep rocks. Uphill runners yield to downhill runners. Participants may not park at the trailhead; dropping off supplies is allowed, but access is expected by drop-off, bicycle, or on foot. The Thumb Open Space is a Town-owned recreation area opened to public access on July 1, 2022, and includes a prominent thumb-like rock outcrop, nearly 50 climbing routes, bouldering opportunities, and trail views of Longs Peak, Mount Meeker, and Twin Sisters. Users are asked to stay on the marked public trail and respect private property. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
