Westmore Mountain Challenge
The Westmore Mountain Challenge is a one-day mountain trail event organized by NorthWoods Stewardship Center in East Charleston, Vermont. The route visits five peaks - Moose, Hor, Pisgah, Haystack, and Bald - and the full route is about 26 miles with a cumulative elevation gain of approximately 6,142 ft. The event supports NorthWoods' conservation and trail stewardship work; a state permit limits the number of participants to reduce trail erosion.
- 26 miles - full marathon length
- 20 miles - trail-only timed option
- 12.3 miles - lunch station finish (not timed)
Route, logistics and services
The course is mostly single-track hiking trails with dirt road connectors for the first 21 miles and the final 5 miles on dirt and paved road. Key support points include a water refill and aid station on the CCC Road overlook to Lake Willoughby, a staffed Rest/Lunch Station at the base of Bald's Long Pond Trail with water, food and a restroom, and a Mad Brook Station with water refill and a safety check-in yurt. Morning transport to the start uses full-size school buses for shuttle drop-offs; parking is not allowed at the Moose Mountain start. Camping on the NorthWoods campus is offered for a fee of $20 per person per night. Participants are responsible for route navigation; the route is flagged but may be altered for safety or erosion concerns. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
