Course, logistics, and mandatory gear
The course follows the Kilkenny Ridge Trail from the South Pond Recreation Area to the Jefferson Inn. The traverse is about 25 miles each way with approximately 7,500 feet of climbing each direction. The route passes Mount Cabot and Mount Waumbek and other peaks called The Bulge, The Horn, and Mount Starr King. The course is very remote and rugged and is not marked; runners must study maps and download the GPS track to their phone or watch. Maps will be available at bib pickup.
Logistics differ by distance: the 50 miler starts and finishes at South Pond with a turnaround at Jefferson Inn; 25 milers are bused to the Jefferson Inn to run back to South Pond; 25K runners are bused to the Berlin Fish Hatchery and return to South Pond. Mandatory gear includes 2 liters of water, minimum 500 calories of food, windbreaker or rain shell, headlamp with extra batteries (not required for the 25K), course map, space blanket, winter hat, gloves, and a water filter. The event is cupless; participants must bring their own hydration system. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
