Background and event purpose
The event is held in memory of Mike Walsh, who died in March 2003 from brain cancer. Proceeds and donations from the event and associated activities have been used to support Bement High School athletics and students. Contributions have funded new girls’ basketball uniforms, new football bleachers, a sound system for the main gym, and 11 Chromebooks. The scholarship 5K has helped 13 student athletes continue their sports careers at college. Organizers have noted plans to consider purchasing shot clocks for Walsh Gymnasium for the 2026 basketball season. The run is described as an annual event held the second Saturday in December.
