Moran Constitutional Relay : event overview
The Moran Constitutional Relay is a team trail relay held on trails in Moran State Park on Orcas Island. The full course is 70 miles divided into 12 legs that tour forests, lakeshores, wetlands, rocky balds, and the summit of 2399-foot Mount Constitution. Legs vary in length and profile, with distances ranging from 3 to 9 miles and a mix of climbs, descents, and flatter sections. Most trails are well-groomed and runnable; a few sections are moderately technical. Each team is made up of two to six runners, and each team member must complete at least two legs. Team members may run consecutive legs. The relay is staged over two days: the first eight legs on the first day and the final four legs on the second day.
Logistics and rules
Registration is limited to the first 50 teams. Team entry includes an event tech t-shirt, a finisher award for teams that complete the course, and meals (Friday light dinner, Saturday breakfast and dinner, Sunday breakfast and post-race meal). Each team must provide a volunteer to staff the event or pay a $190 volunteer fee; volunteers typically work up to six hours at exchange points or course locations. On-site lodging options include cabins (package price of $55 per person for two nights; optional Sunday night for $30) and park campsites. Parking near the event center is limited and ferry access to Orcas Island is available; the park is about a 25-minute drive from the ferry terminal. During hours of darkness runners must carry and use a headlamp or flashlight. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
