Event overview
Run Wild Races XII: Run for Tortoises takes place on May 2, 2026 at the Metro Richmond Zoo in Moseley, VA (8300 Beaver Bridge Rd). The event raises awareness and funds for endangered tortoise species, with 100% of net proceeds designated for Galapagos and Sulcata tortoise conservation. Every registered participant receives race entry, a bib with chip timing, a finishers medal, an event t-shirt, a same-day free zoo ticket, post-race refreshments, and sponsor swag. The race begins inside the zoo and includes routes with up-close views of zoo animals and sections that pass through conservation areas.
Race formats and practical information
Distances offered:
- 1 mile Mini fun run through zoo pathways
- 3.1 miles all-terrain 5k around the zoo and perimeter
- Approx. 2 miles Wild Ninja obstacle course
- Virtual 5k and Ninja Full Access Spectator options are available
Age and participant rules: the Mini is open to ages 2 and older; Mini awards apply to participants 17 and under. The 5k is for ages 5 and older; children ages 5–10 must be accompanied by a participating parent or designated chaperone. Wild Ninja is open to ages 8 and older; ages 8–14 must compete with a participating adult or have a full-access spectator.
Course and services: the Mini course is roughly 90% pavement, 5% gravel, 5% dirt. The 5k starts on pavement then shifts to dirt, mulch, grass, and gravel with rolling hills and bridges. Water stations: none on the Mini except before and after, two on the 5k, and one on Wild Ninja. Porta-potties are at the start/finish and the zoo restrooms at the Treetop Zoofari building are accessible. Packet pickup is Friday, May 1 (pre-race) and race-day at the zoo parking area.
