Course, aid, and logistics

The trails pass through coastal redwoods, stream canyons, meadows, pine and oak forests, and chaparral-covered ridges. Distances are measured with a Rolatape surveyor's wheel. Course marking includes colored ribbon about every 200 yards, color codes by distance, and polka-dot flagging that indicates turns; blue ribbons mark wrong directions. Headphones are allowed only on dirt-road sections and are not allowed on single-track trail, when crossing paved roads, while getting aid, or when crossing the finish line. Dogs are not allowed on the course.

Elevation gain and surface breakdown by distance:

  • 10K: 800' gain; single track 59%, dirt road 41%
  • Half Marathon: 2,175' gain; single track 58%, dirt road 42%
  • 30K: 3,000' gain; single track 62%, dirt road 38%
  • Marathon: 4,350' gain; single track 58%, dirt road 42%
  • 50K: 5,175' gain; single track 60%, dirt road 40%

Aid stations are fully stocked every 6–7 miles with fruit, salty snacks, candy, water, and Skratch electrolyte drink. Runners are advised to carry at least 20 oz. of water between aid stations. The event is cupless; runners should bring their own fluid container. Free parking is available and drop bags are allowed for the 30K, Marathon, and 50K.
