Event overview
The Wausau Trail Run is an evening trail race held at Nine Mile County Forest in central Wisconsin. Registration for the next edition opens on January 1, 2026. The event offers the following distances:
- 5K
- 10K
- Half Marathon
The run takes place on a combination of single-track mountain bike and ski trails and begins as the sun is about to set, so all runners are required to carry at least one light source. Music, food and beer are available at the venue after the run.
Course, schedule and rules
Course maps for 2025 are published in June and distances may vary due to winding trails; maps are subject to change. Parking is free and carpooling with parking on Red Bud Road is encouraged. Camping is available for Wausau 24 participants on Saturday and Sunday.
Only registered racers, credentialed media and event staff may run on the designated racecourse; spectators must stay clear of the course. No dogs are allowed on the course, though leashed dogs are permitted at the venue. Race numbers must be displayed on the front. No listening devices with earphones or speakers are allowed on course. First aid is provided by Wisconsin Mountain Bike Patrol. Water and nutrition are available at Red Bud Road and at Checkpoint Charlie, located at approximately mile 8 of the Half Marathon. Awards are given to 1st-3rd place, male and female, in listed age categories; recipients must be present to receive awards. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
