Course, aid stations and logistics
The point-to-point course runs from Sturgeon Lake to Duluth along the Willard Munger Trail. The trail is paved and nearly flat for the first ~40 miles, with an overall downhill finish that drops about 500 feet over the final 10 miles. Start and finish addresses are provided by the organizer. Transportation from the finish back to the start is included with entry; relay teams are responsible for exchange-point transportation.
There are eleven aid stations offering water, energy drink, gels, cookies, salted nut rolls, soda and more. Cups will be provided and refillable containers will be filled. Relay teams use four exchange zones; relay leg distances are:
- Leg 1: 5.75 miles
- Leg 2: 5.6 miles
- Leg 3: 10.95 miles
- Leg 4: 12.35 miles
- Leg 5: 15.35 miles
Cutoffs apply at specific aid stations and an overall 14-hour finish cutoff is required for an official finisher. Prize money includes $5,000 for anyone who sets a new American 50-mile best and cash for top three open and masters finishers. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
