Course and surface
All races start at Lake Mead's Boulder Beach Special Events Beach (BBQ area). The course begins with a gradual uphill on a wide roadway, then turns onto the paved River Mountains Loop Trail, which is about 12 feet wide and runs parallel to Lakeshore Drive. The route joins the Historic Railroad Tunnel Trail before mile 3 and follows a hard-packed dirt trail through several old railroad tunnels on a ridge above Lake Mead and the marina.
After the tunnels the route passes an area with power plants, then descends six switchbacks to the upper level parking garage at Hoover Dam and runs a counterclockwise loop along the dam edge. The marathon consists of two loops of the described circuit. Packed-dirt trail accounts for roughly 14 miles of the full marathon and 7 miles of the half; the remainder is paved asphalt. The course does not go over the dam. A sturdy road running shoe is recommended; trail shoes are not necessary. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
