Race The Cog : Bretton Woods, New Hampshire

Race The Cog is a mountain footrace that finishes on the summit of Mount Washington. Registration opens October 1, 2025. The event is presented by Delta Dental and is part of the Delta Dental Mountain Challenge series; a $1,000 prize is offered to anyone who beats the elite wave train. Spectator train tickets are available through the Mount Washington Cog Railway. Volunteers earn race credits toward future Aravaipa events.

Course and logistics

The Summit Climb follows the Cog Railway tracks from the Marshfield base station to the summit. The course gains about 3,500 feet of elevation over the ascent, with more than 1,000 feet of climbing per mile. The surface begins as dirt and gravel, becomes steeper and rockier near Jacobs Ladder, and includes large boulder fields on the upper Presidential Range. Weather can vary widely between base and summit; temperatures and winds can change quickly. The Summit Climb entry includes a Cog train ride from the summit back to the base; trains depart hourly and have a one-hour layover on the summit. No participant gear or bags will be taken to the summit.

  • 2.75 miles - Summit Climb, includes train ride down
  • 5.5 miles - Devil's Shingle Roundtripper, summit and return on foot

Aid stations at Waumbek Station (0.9 miles) and the summit provide water, Tailwind, soda, snacks, and fresh fruit. The event is cupless; participants must bring their own hydration. Post-race food and ice cream tickets are provided at the base. Refunds between 30 and more than 5 days before the event are credited at 50% toward next year; within 5 days no credit is given.
