Sundance to Spearfish Marathon
The Sundance to Spearfish Marathon is a scenic, mostly downhill race held in the Black Hills region spanning Wyoming and South Dakota. The course starts at Cement Ridge, Wyoming, and finishes in Spearfish, South Dakota, covering the full marathon distance of 26.2 miles. The first 12 miles traverse runnable gravel roads through mountain meadows, valleys, and canyons, including a notable site from the film "Dances with Wolves." The remaining 14 miles follow a paved descent along Spearfish Canyon Highway, a National Scenic Byway.
The course features a single challenging hill early on and offers significant elevation drops totaling nearly 3,000 feet. It is USATF certified and a popular Boston Marathon qualifier. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
