Sundance to Spearfish Marathon
The Sundance to Spearfish Marathon is a scenic, mostly downhill race spanning Wyoming and South Dakota's Black Hills. Starting at Cement Ridge in Wyoming, the first 12 miles traverse runnable gravel roads through mountain meadows, valleys, and canyons, including the winter film site of "Dances with Wolves." After a brief uphill section early on, the course continues for 14 miles on paved Spearfish Canyon Highway, a National Scenic Byway, descending into Spearfish, South Dakota. The marathon features a total elevation drop of nearly 3,000 feet, making it a fast course and one of only two USATF-certified Boston qualifying marathons in Wyoming.
Registration is limited to 100 participants, emphasizing a small but competitive atmosphere. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
