Sundance to Spearfish Marathon
The Sundance to Spearfish Marathon is a scenic, mostly downhill race held in the Black Hills region spanning Wyoming and South Dakota. The 26.2-mile course starts at Cement Ridge, Wyoming, and finishes in Spearfish, South Dakota. The first 12 miles feature runnable gravel roads through mountain meadows, valleys, and canyons, including a notable site from the film "Dances with Wolves." The remaining 14 miles descend on paved Spearfish Canyon Highway, a National Scenic Byway.
The course drops over 2,900 feet in elevation, with only one challenging hill early on. It is USATF certified and offers Boston Marathon qualifying potential, attracting a small, competitive field capped at 100 runners. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
