Sundance to Spearfish Marathon

The Sundance to Spearfish Marathon takes place in September in Spearfish, South Dakota, starting from Cement Ridge near the Wyoming border and finishing along Spearfish Canyon Highway to Spearfish. The course is almost entirely downhill, with only a short uphill from mile 2.0 to 2.56 totaling 169 feet. The first 12 miles run on runnable gravel roads through mountain meadows, valleys, and canyons, dropping about 1,606 feet; at mile 9.35 the winter film site for “Dances with Wolves” is passed.

The remaining 14 miles are paved and descend Spearfish Canyon Hwy to Spearfish, dropping another 1,364 feet. It is a USATF-certified Boston-Qualifying course, counting toward either Wyoming or South Dakota. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
