Sawmill Trail Runs : Staunton State Park
The Sawmill Trail Runs is a trail race held at Staunton State Park in Pine, CO with start/finish at the Ranch Hand Group Picnic Area (12102 S Elk Creek Rd). Distances offered:
- 50k
- 16-Mile
- 8-Mile
The event has a combined runner capacity of 250 across all distances. Time limits are 12 hours for the 50k and 11 hours for the 8- and 16-Mile events. The race began as an informal event in 2013, became an official race in 2017, and moved to Staunton State Park in 2021.
Logistics, course and rules
The course is at high elevation, generally at 8,000 feet and higher; the park ranges from about 8,100 ft to over 10,000 ft. Weather and trail conditions can vary widely in December. Traction devices such as micro-spikes are permitted when conditions allow; snowshoes are permitted if snow exceeds 6". In deep snow, the first loop of the 50k may be closed and 50k runners may be switched to two laps of the 16-Mile course. Aid stations are described as well stocked. Included items listed are a gender-specific race shirt and a finisher’s medal; all finishers receive a unique finisher’s award. Awards will not be mailed; there are no podium or age-group awards.
Spectators are allowed only at the start/finish area and must pay applicable state park entry fees. Crews and pacers are prohibited. Drop bags are allowed only at the start/finish area. Most participants must park off-site at a park-and-ride and use volunteer shuttles; a small number may park inside the park and must have a state park pass.
