The course is at high elevation, generally at 8,000 feet and higher; the park ranges from about 8,100 ft to over 10,000 ft. Weather and trail conditions can vary widely in December. Traction devices such as micro-spikes are permitted when conditions allow; snowshoes are permitted if snow exceeds 6". In deep snow, the first loop of the 50k may be closed and 50k runners may be switched to two laps of the 16-Mile course. Aid stations are described as well stocked.
